I turned to catching up on my Daily Science Fiction (DSF) backlog this week, so they once again wheigh heavy on the list. As alway, any suggestions of your own are welcome in the comments.
The Future of Parenting by Jules Jensen (DSF): The story puts a new twist on the familiar trope of a family with a robot child. By having the parents being able to amateurishly reprogram the boy, it nicely highlights what it’s like to be a teenager and not being in full control of your own life. The writing is a bit stilted, the emotions being “told” rather than “shown”, but other than that it’s an excellent story.
The Inquisitor’s Chair by Michelle Muenzler (DSF): Excellent sentence level writing that concisely shows us the protagonist’s situation and emotions and the tone of the story. Add to that some gritty sarcasm and the author can even manage to get away with info dumping in the opening. Overall an extremely good flash fiction piece.
Audience by Ty Franck (Intergalactic Medicine Show): More an exploration of ideas than an actually story really, and for a longer work I don’t think it would’ve worked, but for a flash piece/short short story, the author managed to get away with it. He nicely ties explore and tie together the two ideas, what it would be like if everyone practiced within their giving field as soon as they could, and who chooses what is good and bad art and how our own emotions and hidden motives playes into these decisions.
